“Porsches are about fun. And Porsche’s Boxster S is an absolutely bewitching piece of road-going entertainment. Like some agile, delicately muscled gymnast confidently treading a balance beam, the Boxster S traces narrow two-lanes with quick-twitch muscle, precision, and rock-solid balance. The really blazing heat in this two-seater is its chassis balance. Every ounce of power gets applied, and the lateral stick really challenges your neck muscles. Simply beautiful, terrifically fun, and remarkably civilized in day-to-day driving, the Boxster S makes instant fans out of new drivers.”

Background
The Boxster S model was first introduced in 2000. The Boxster was Porsche’s first road vehicle to be originally designed as a roadster since the iconic (and now priceless) 50’s 550 Spyder. Many believe the introduction of the Boxster helped save Porsche from acquisition. The Boxster S uses the 3.2 litre M96 engine, a water-cooled, horizontally opposed flat six-cylinder engine. It was Porsche’s first water-cooled non-front engine. In the Boxster, it is placed mid-engine, while in the 911, rear-engine. The flat, mid-engine layout provides a low centre of gravity, near-perfect weight distribution, and neutral handling. The Boxster was released ahead of the more expensive 996 generation 911 and shares the bonnet, front wings, headlights, interior and engine architecture.
The Boxster S transformed the ‘good’ Boxster into a truly great car. It added choice upgrades from the 911 Carrera as well as the larger, more powerful and responsive engine. Compared to the non ‘S’ Boxster, the S has a central nose air intake feeding an extra cooling radiator, red-painted 911 brake calipers, bigger disc brakes/wheels/tyres, a 911 based gearbox with sixth gear, a convertible-top headliner, an alarm system, one more exhaust tip and the steering wheel from the 911 Carrera. The 986 Boxster is starting to be recognised among collectors, at current price levels it represents the best combination of performance, entertainment and reliability in the whole Porsche range (current and classic models).
Exterior
Our hand selected Porsche Boxster S looks stunning in its striking coat of Speed Yellow, an optional colour for the car and shared with the 911 GT3 of the era. The striking silver 17 inch Sport Classic light alloy wheels are the perfect contrast to the deep and glossy paintwork. The paintwork is very good, showing no signs of fade, damage or lacquer peel. The Boxster S has been waxed with Autoglym High Definition Wax by us, which will help protect the paintwork and repel surface contaminants. All the trim has a perfect finish, as do the clear front and rear lights, which are free from any damage or moisture buildup. The convertible hood works faultlessly. The windows drop as they should when you open the door. The front and rear boot struts also operate as they should.
Interior
The optional Black leather Hardback Sports seats and rest of the extended interior leather is in excellent condition and provide a perfect contrast to the Speed Yellow bodywork. There are no marks or signs of wear to any of the trim, panels or switchgear, with the leather retaining a wholly fresh appearance throughout.
Equipment
All the key options are fitted to our Boxster S, including the upgraded Becker CDR-22 CD head unit, Hi-Fi 6-speaker sound system, Graduated green tinted windscreen glass, Coloured wheel crests, Hardback sports seats and Automatic climate control. Standard items include Boxster S inscribed sill covers, black exhaust tips, retractable rear spoiler, Electric windows, Headlight washers, Remote central locking, PSM Traction Control, ABS, Locking wheel bolts, Locking centre armrest, Spare Wheel, Alarm and Immobiliser. All equipment fitted to our Boxster S works perfectly, so the car is exactly as it left the factory in 2000.
Engine and Transmission
Our Boxster is equipped with the 3.2 litre flat six engine. The Boxster S engine provides an extra 33bhp of power (taking output to 250bhp) and an additional 33 lb·ft of torque (increasing it to 225 lb·ft) compared to the non ‘S’ version. The four valves per cylinder ensure smooth power delivery through the rpm range. The axle load distribution of 47:53 ensures high directional stability and superb road behaviour. The engine starts cleanly when cold or hot, there is no smoke whatsoever either at startup or when driving. There are no unusual sounds or rattles when the engine is running. With its compact design and low weight, the 911 derived 6-speed manual gearbox is a simple, direct way to tap into the power of the Boxster S. The manual transmission system provides short gearshift travel and precise lever movement, giving you the highest possible level of accessibility with the minimum of fuss.
Wheels, Tyres and Brakes
Our Boxster S comes fitted with the optional 17 inch Sport Classic light alloy wheels, which are free from major kerbing or corrosion. The 911 derived brakes are phenomenal, cross drilled and vented discs front and rear. The front and rear brake discs and pads have plenty of life left in them. The tyres are matching Michelin Pilot Sport items with 3-4 mm of tread on the front and rear.
