Background
“The 997 Turbo is unquestionably the best sports car the world has ever seen. That much is non-negotiable. It does things normal cars can’t: it behaves, adapts, creates traction, generates adhesion and decelerates like no road car I have ever driven. It isn’t the fastest car against the watch but, in terms of net available performance, the 997 Turbo marks a new beginning. It is so supple, so amenable, so perpetually on your side, that covering ground now feels somehow different to the way it did yesterday. Everything is so good here – the new transmission, the adaptive damping that somehow manages to preen acceptable ride from those shallow sidewalls – that no single component can possibly shine.”
Autocar Magazine, 2006 (Chris Harris)

In 1974, Porsche engineers tested a dramatic power-boosting technology from their dominating 917 race cars in a road-going 911. Ever since that first enhanced model, ultimate performance has been defined by a single word: Turbo. The 997-series 911 Turbo model was first introduced in 2006, building on the high bar set by the first water-cooled 911 Turbo, the 996-generation model. The 911 Turbo is enhanced in every sense compared to the Carrera models. Production of the generation 1.5 997 series 911 Turbo began in mid 2008, it retained the rear mounted 3.6 litre flat six Mezger twin-turbo engine and combined it with the generation 2 onboard electronic systems, PCM 3.0 touchscreen navigation, climate control system and updated Porsche key design. The exterior styling of the 911 Turbo was unchanged from the generation 1 cars, which were ahead of their time, with a distinct front and enlarged rear bumper, front daylight running lights, lightweight forged alloy wheels and realtime tyre pressure monitoring for ultimate safety at speed.

The 911 Turbo has a race derived Mezger engine, developed directly from the 911 GT1 racing car. Low to Mid-range punch is the 997 Turbo’s party trick and while 473bhp might not sound that impressive today when there are saloons and estates around packing considerably more, it still feels seriously rapid. Thanks to the Variable Vane Turbo Geometry, it has that instant thrust that compresses internal organs against the back of the seat and draws involuntary whoops of delight and a flow of power that just keeps on coming. The chassis and brakes are a perfect match for the engine’s performance, so invariably you’re always travelling faster than you think you are.

The 911 Turbo wide body never looked so good. The all-wheel drive system sends between 5% – 40% of torque forward depending on traction and power applied, so it is mostly rear wheel drive. The 911 Turbo strengthened suspension and 350mm vented, cross- drilled steel disc brakes all round, take handling up a notch. Today, it seems that the 997 is recognised among collectors, notably the Turbo, GT2 and GT3 are highly sought, as are the Carrera 4S.

Exterior
Our hand selected Porsche 911 Turbo looks stunning in its optional metallic coat of Arctic Silver, a striking colour for the 997 gen 1.5, especially with the diamond cut 19-inch Turbo 3.6 forged lightweight alloy wheels. The paintwork condition is excellent, with no blemishes on any panel. The 911 Turbo has been waxed with Autoglym Ultra High Definition Wax by us, which will help protect the paintwork and repel surface contaminants. All the trim has a perfect finish, as do the front and optional red rear lights, which are free from any damage or moisture buildup. The windows drop as they should when you open the door. The engine and boot struts also operate as they should.

Interior
The ultimate 16-way Adaptive Hardback leather sports seats come with optional 2-stage heating and drivers seat/mirror memory, and just like the rest of the extended Black interior leather, are in excellent condition and provide a perfect contrast to the Arctic Silver metallic bodywork. The 3-Spoke leather multi-function steering wheel is a fantastic option, with it’s slightly thicker leather rim. The optional adaptive hardback sports seats offer high comfort with excellent sports performance. Along with all the adjustment features of the comfort seats, the side bolsters on the seat surface and backrest are individually electrically adjustable, for increased comfort on long journeys and tailor-made lateral support through bends. The memory function supports both exterior mirrors and all seat positions on the driver’s side, apart from the side bolsters. The centre console was also special ordered in leather rather than plastic, which is a choice upgrade that adds another touch of sophistication to the cabin. There are no marks or signs of wear to any of the trim, panels or switchgear, with the leather retaining a wholly fresh appearance throughout.

Engine and Transmission
Although the Turbo is water-cooled it is not the same engine that is in regular 997 Carrera models. The turbo charged engine can trace its ancestry back to the old air-cooled units and is directly related not only to the 996 GT3 but also the Lemans 911 GT1 racer (3.2 litres and 600bhp). The engine has forged internal components, so as a result it is very strong and can be tuned up to well over 800bhp. As standard the Turbo has 473bhp at 6,000rpm. The axle load distribution of 40:60 ensures high directional stability and superb road behaviour.

The all-wheel drive system is biased towards the rear; the system sends between 5% – 40% of torque forward depending on traction and power applied. The engine starts cleanly when cold or hot, there is no smoke whatsoever either at startup or when driving. There are no unusual sounds or rattles when the engine is running.

With its compact design and low weight, the Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox is a simple, direct way to tap into the power of the 911 Turbo. The manual transmission system provides short gearshift travel and precise lever movement, giving you the highest possible level of accessibility with the minimum of fuss. This 911 Turbo was fitted with the optional factory short shift kit which further enhances the shift quality and direct feel of the gearbox.

Our 911 Turbo is fitted with Sport Chrono Plus Package, which adds a SPORT button that sharpens the throttle response, adds 60nm of Torque temporarily (approximately 0.2 bar of Turbo Boost) whilst also adding a dashboard mounted stopwatch to add to the sporting image of the 911 Turbo. It is also equipped with the highly desired switchable sports suspension system, which includes the dashboard switch that stiffens the suspension in an instant, increasing connection to the road.

Wheels, Tyres and Brakes
Our 911 Turbo 997 Generation 1.5 comes fitted with the original diamond cut finish, forged 19-inch Turbo 3.6 lightweight alloy wheels, which are unmarked, free of damage and corrosion. The brake discs and pads are in good condition with minimal wear. The tyres are N1 rated Bridgestone Potenza RE050A high performance tyres which are brand new at the rear and have 4mm of tread on the front.

History File
Our Porsche 911 Turbo has a full Official Porsche Centre (OPC) and Porsche Specialist service history with PARR and PorschaCare. The last service including brake fluid was completed at 39,800 miles in June 2020 at PorschaCare Porsche Specialist, Hertfordshire.

The spark plugs were last changed at 37,700 miles, the auxiliary belt was changed at 33,500 miles and the brake fluid was last changed at 39,800 miles. All of this crucial work was carried out on schedule.

The car comes complete with the original stamped service book, original owners manual pack, invoices in a history/provenance file, two original Porsche keys and a tracker fob. The 911 Turbo is HPI clear, May 2021 MOT and will come with a comprehensive six months warranty for total peace of mind. We are a Hertfordshire based Porsche Specialist.
