“The 911 Turbo is truly the stuff of legend, offering genuine supercar performance in a compact and practical package. With four-wheel drive, a water-cooled engine, a smooth new bodyshell and radically updated cabin, it is a thoroughly sophisticated, all-weather, all-road supercar”
EVO Magazine, 2009

The wide rear end of the Turbo charged Porsche 911 complete with raised spoiler is iconic and instantly recognisable, enhanced on this example with the dual stainless steel exhaust tips.

Background
In 1974, Porsche engineers tested a dramatic power-boosting technology from their dominating 917 race cars in a road-going 911. Ever since that first enhanced model, ultimate performance has been defined by a single word: Turbo. The 996-series 911 Turbo model was first introduced in 2000, it was the first model in the series to showcase a revised front end with a new headlight design. The 911 Turbo is enhanced in every sense compared to the Carrera models.

The 911 Turbo has a race derived Mezger engine, developed directly from the 911 GT1 racing car. Mid-range punch is the 996 Turbo’s party trick and while 420bhp might not sound that impressive today when there are saloons and estates around packing considerably more, it still feels seriously rapid. It has that instant thrust that compresses internal organs against the back of the seat and draws involuntary whoops of delight and a flow of power of power that just keeps on coming. The chassis and brakes are a perfect match for the engine’s performance, so invariably you’re always travelling faster than you think you are, especially with the optional GT2 suspension, engine and gearbox mounts.

The 911 Turbo wide body never looked so good. The all-wheel drive system sends between 5% – 40% of torque forward depending on traction and power applied, so it is mostly rear wheel drive. The aluminium Turbo hollow 5-spoke alloy wheels suit the rest of the car down to a tee. The 911 Turbo suspension and 13-inch vented, cross- drilled steel disc brakes, take handling up a notch. Today, it seems that the 996 is starting to be recognised among collectors, notably the Turbo, GT2 and GT3 are highly sought, as are the Carrera 4S.

Production of the 911 Turbo ceased at the end of 2004, along with most other 996 generation 911 models, excluding the GT3, GT2 and Turbo S.

Exterior
Our hand selected Porsche 911 Turbo looks stunning in its metallic coat of Lapis Blue, in the sun the colour transforms. The striking silver Turbo hollow 5-spoke alloy wheels are the perfect contrast to the fresh and glossy paintwork. The paintwork condition is excellent, with no blemishes on any panel. The 911 Turbo has been waxed with Autoglym High Definition Wax by us, which will help protect the paintwork and repel surface contaminants. All the trim has a perfect finish, as do the front and rear lights, which are free from any damage or moisture buildup. The windows drop as they should when you open the door. The engine and boot struts also operate as they should. This 911 Turbo has been kept garaged for the majority of its life, which is reflected in the condition of the window seals and headlight lenses.

Interior
The sports hardback leather seats are finished in Graphite Grey, which is a great contrast for the Lapis Blue exterior. The seats were specified with height adjustment for both driver and passenger. This 911 Turbo is well appointed with . There are no marks or signs of excessive wear to any of the trim, panels or switchgear, with the leather retaining a wholly fresh appearance throughout.

Engine and Transmission
Our 911 Turbo is equipped with the 3.6 litre flat six twin turbo engine. Although the Turbo is water-cooled it is not the same engine that is in regular 996 Carrera models. The turbo charged engine can trace its ancestry back to the old air-cooled units and is directly related not only to the 996 GT3 but also the Lemans 911 GT1 racer (3.2 litres and 600bhp). The engine has forged internal components, so as a result it is very strong and can be tuned up to well over 500bhp. As standard the Turbo has 420bhp at 6,000rpm. The axle load distribution of 40:60 ensures high directional stability and superb road behaviour.

The all-wheel drive system is biased towards the rear; the system sends between 5% – 40% of torque forward depending on traction and power applied. The engine starts cleanly when cold or hot, there is no smoke whatsoever either at startup or when driving. There are no unusual sounds or rattles when the engine is running.

With its compact design and low weight, the 6-speed manual gearbox is a simple, direct way to tap into the power of the 911 Turbo. The manual transmission system provides short gearshift travel and precise lever movement, giving you the highest possible level of accessibility with the minimum of fuss.

The X73 Suspension Package combines the 20mm lower M030 spring package with the firmer Bilstein B6 dampers, which make the suspension setup identical to the 996 GT2. This 911 Turbo also has the GT2 engine and gearbox mounts.

Wheels, Tyres and Brakes
Our 911 Turbo comes fitted with the 18 inch hollow ’5-Spoke’ Turbo alloy wheels, which save a staggering 3kg per wheel. They are unmarked, free of kerbing damage and corrosion. The Turbo brakes are phenomenal, cross drilled and vented discs front and rear with four piston callipers all round. The front and rear brake discs and pads have plenty of life left in them, showing no lip on the edges, having been replaced in recent years. The tyres are matching Porsche N3 rated Michelin Pilot Sport items with around 6mm of tread on the front and 4.5mm at the rear.

History File
Our Porsche 911 Turbo has a full Porsche Main Dealer (OPC) and Specialist service history with evidence of all work carried out shown in the original service booklet and accompanying invoices. The last major service was completed at 74,753 miles and included spark plugs, auxiliary belt, oil/air/pollen/fuel filters, brake fluid change, exhaust bolts, turbo/intercooler heat shields and a full inspection by PorschaCare in January 2020.
