But the Audi RS4 has so much more in its locker than most of us imagined, even after taking it for a spirited road drive, that it’s scarcely credible. It combines the most extraordinary, race-like powertrain with, much of the time, perfectly respectable comfort over long distances. When you do want to get everything out of the RS4, it pays not to approach it with smoothness and delicacy, as you might to obtain the best grip and pace of most large cars. No. Instead, you take it by the scruff and bully the heck out of it, simply applying more throttle when you think grip is running low, whereupon it will find unfathomable reserves of grip and traction. It responds like a plus-size variant of the most aggressive, brutal rally replica. The latest RS4 will go down as not just one of the fastest RS models, but also one of the finest.

Background
The Audi RS4 Avant quattro was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and shares the same powertrain as the RS5 Coupe. Compared to the related B8 S4, the RS4 features larger bumper air dams and features double oval exhaust tailpipes. Wider arches allow for a wider axle and wheels. A completely remodelled front bumper cover with honeycomb grill compared to the standard A4 and S4 as well as remodelled rear bumper with honeycomb detailing and air diffuser. The interior is largely the same but the flat-bottom steering wheel is covered entirely in perforated leather with RS badging on the steering wheel and gear stick. The interior dashboard and door liners are also detailed with carbon fibre inserts as standard. SuperSport seats covered partly with leather part Alcantara were standard in the B8 RS4. The RS4 is powered by a 4.2 litre FSI V8 engine producing 450 PS (444bhp) and 317 lbf⋅ft torque allowing the car to accelerate from 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds. New for the B8 are ‘wavy’ vented and floating cast iron discs, 365mm diameter with 6-piston Brembo floating callipers, and at the rear 330mm discs with a single-piston floating calliper. The standard wheels were 19 inch, optional 20 inch rotor design or 10 spoke alloy wheels were also available. A sports pack was available which included a Sports exhaust identifiable by black exhaust tips in the rear bumper, and Dynamic Ride Control suspension. The Sports pack also came with the 20″ rotor design wheels as standard. A total of 7,000 examples of the Audi B8 RS4 were built.

Exterior
The RS4 Avant looks stunning in its pearlescent coat of Daytona Grey, an optional colour for the car which is one of the most desired colours for the Audi RS4. The paintwork condition is excellent, with no blemishes on any panel. All the trim has a perfect finish, as do the front Dynamic Bi-Xenon lights and rear LED lights, which are free from any damage or moisture. The windows drop as they should when you open the door. The engine and boot struts operate as they should.

Interior
The black leather and Alcantara RS Supersport seats are in excellent condition, and provide a perfect compliment to the Daytona Grey Pearl Effect bodywork. There are no marks or signs of wear to any of the trim or switchgear, with the leather and Alcantara retaining a wholly fresh appearance throughout. The sleek aesthetic is topped-off with features like the flat-bottomed RS perforated leather steering wheel, which is in superb condition.

Engine & Transmission
The B8-series Audi RS4 features a sonorous naturally aspirated V8 engine, longitudinally mounted. The basis of this engine is shared with the R8 and RS5 of the same era, with some changes to suit the application. This was the last V8 engine RS4, subsequent versions of the RS4 transitioned to a V6 platform with turbo charging to meet EU regulations across the whole Audi fleet. The engine produces 444 bhp at 8,250 rpm, and torque of 332 lb·ft at 4,000–6,000 rpm. The RS4 is equipped with the S-Tronic Dual Clutch 7-Speed semi-automatic gearbox, which can shift gears in hundredths of a second, both in full automatic or manual mode, via the shifter or steering wheel mounted paddles. The RS4 has four drive modes, selectable on the fly, COMFORT, DYNAMIC, AUTO and INDIVIDUAL, the last mode allows you to fine tune your ideal combination of drivetrain settings, including engine response, gearbox behaviour, exhaust valves, dynamic steering and suspension.

Our RS4 is equipped with the optional Sports Exhaust System, which increases the aural experience while driving, it is a full dual exhaust system with twin black oval exits, instead of chrome.

The Audi RS 4 Avant offers a special version of the quattro drivetrain. Its main component is the self-locking crown gear centre differential that has disc sets to achieve high blocking factors for even better traction. It is also lighter and more compact than the previous design. The asymmetrical basic design of the torque distribution of 40 : 60 (front axle : rear axle) is retained for the benefit of the driving dynamics; but now a greater share of the torque can be directed to the front or rear axle if required. In conjunction with the wheel-selective torque control, the drive force is distributed to each individual wheel depending on the driving situation. The special feature here is that the effect of torque distribution is felt before undesirable wheel slip occurs. This allows a resulting yaw moment to be produced which supports cornering. The overall result is precisely controllable and sporty vehicle handling as well as increased agility coupled with outstanding traction.

The RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) is fitted as an option on our RS4. With this suspension technology, the nodding and pitching movements of the vehicle around the lateral and longitudinal axes are reduced purely hydraulically. The diagonal dampers are connected to one another via oil pipes and one central valve each. If the dampers are immersed differently, for example during fast cornering, the valves affect the oil flow at the cushioned wheel. They increase support there, thus reducing side tilt and increasing driving dynamics. The RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) can be adjusted in three stages via Audi drive select: in the COMFORT mode it guarantees smooth rolling behaviour, the auto setting supports a committed driving style and in the dynamic position it delivers maximum driving precision.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The RS4 rides on optional 20-inch 5-blade Rotor wheels, which are unmarked, having been fully refurbished by Audi in June 2020. The brakes are phenomenal, with plenty of life left in them. The tyres are matching Michelin Pilot Sport 4S high performance tyres with lots of tread remaining, having all been replaced in the last year or so.
